CALF IMPLANTS CASE #171

A 23-year-old female patient from Miami presents to our Fort Lauderdale practice for consultation regarding correction of right calf. She had a paralysis of the left leg in the childhood and as a result of a muscle paralysis she ended up with lesser developed right calf. In order to correct her deformity we suggested calf enlargement and reshaping with silicone implant. Patient was measured and thoroughly evaluated for implant size and shape to match a normal left leg.

Surgery was done in general anesthesia. Through a small incision placed in the knee crease an elongated elliptical implant was placed on top of the atrophic muscles. Patient was discharged home 1 hour after surgery. She was encouraged to walk for two days with a walker.

Deformity before right calf surgery is shown on the left. Images on the right show corrected deformity and close to symmetric result with normally developed left calf; however, there is a small difference in the size between calves.  Patient was given an option to have current implant exchanged with a larger one in the future.
