HAND REJUVENATION WITH FAT GRAFTS
Any area of the body’s appearance is determined by three basic components: skin; soft tissue, including muscles; and skeleton. As we age, our skin becomes thinner, our muscles and subcutaneous fat tissue atrophy, and our bone contours become more prominent.
Our hands are not immune to that generalized pattern of aging. Thin skin with visible veins, deep grooves between the bones, and an overall skeletonized appearance may all prompt a patient to think about hand rejuvenation with fat transfer. In addition to replacement of volume by means of fat grafts or soft-tissue fillers, hand rejuvenation involves skin treatment.

Skin rejuvenation involves mild to intermediate chemical peels to thicken and improve the texture of the skin and decrease transparency so that underlying veins do not show that much. Repeated treatments may be needed to keep the skin in good condition.
Volume replacement by means of fat transfer or soft tissue fillers to compensate for wasting of the muscles and subcutaneous tissue is another significant component of hand rejuvenation.

MORE ABOUT FAT TRANSFER
Adding volume to fill deep grooves on the back of the hand and thickening the atrophic subcutaneous fat tissue will provide multiple benefits. It will make skeletonized hands look fuller and rounded, which is a feature of a youthful hand. Thicker subcutaneous tissue will diminish transparency of thin skin and, to a certain degree, diminish visibility of veins and tendons on the back of the hand.
Grafts for fat transfer are harvested from the thigh or the abdomen, or in a process of liposuction for other reasons. Harvested fat is then prepared into injectable fat grafts. Using very small cannula, grafts are injected into selected areas of the hand to achieve the desired youthful contours.
