GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY AND OTHER MALE BREAST PROCEDURES
Dr. Zoran Potparic performs gynecomastia surgery, called reduction mammoplasty or male breast reduction, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Through this procedure he reduces the size of enlarged male breasts, flattening and enhancing the chest contour. In severe cases, the weight of breast tissue may cause stretching and sagging of the breast and areola. In such cases, the position and the size of the areola can be surgically improved and excess skin may be removed. In mild to moderate gynecomastia, improvement may be achieved by liposculpturing the breast via liposuction, while a skin excision may be needed in more extensive cases.
Dr. Zoran Potparic is available to discuss gynecomastia surgery at his practice in Fort Lauderdale. For a free consultation please call (954) 779-2777 or contact us online.

WHAT IS GYNECOMASTIA?
Gynecomastia is a condition of overdeveloped and enlarged breasts in men. It is common at any age. It can be heredity or a result of hormonal changes (puberty), age (50 to 60), breast disease, or the use of certain drugs. It is characterized by excess localized fat tissue, excess glandular tissue development, or a combination of both. It can be present unilaterally (one breast) or bilaterally (both breasts).
GYNECOMASTIA REDUCTION WITH LIPOSUCTION
In cases where gynecomastia is primarily the result of excess fatty tissue, liposuction techniques alone may be used. This requires several small incisions, well hidden in the creases. A small cannula is inserted underneath the skin, and excess breast and fat tissue is loosened and liquefied, then removed from the body using vacuum suction.
Traditional (mechanical-power assisted) or ultrasound-assisted liposuction techniques can be used, depending on Dr. Potparic’s preference.
- Price estimate for male breast surgery (gynecomastia): $3,000 – $6,000+
- Type of anesthesia: twilight or general
- Duration of surgery: 1 to 2 hours
- Surgical facility: AAAA-certified Ambulatory Surgical Center, outpatient surgery center
- Recovery time: 1 week
- Discomfort: none to mild
GYNECOMASTIA REDUCTION WITH SKIN REDUCTION
Excision of areola and breast skin is recommended where glandular tissue and excess skin must be removed to correct a deformity. Excision is also necessary if the areola is too large or the nipple/areola needs to be repositioned to achieve a more natural male chest contour. The incision location will depend on the specific condition and Dr. Potparic’s preference.
A combination of liposuction and skin excision may be used to avoid extensive scars. Occasionally skin excision may be needed as a secondary procedure if liposuction of gynecomastia results in a saggy-looking breast due to insufficient contraction of the skin after liposuction.
- Type of anesthesia: twilight or general
- Duration of surgery: 2 to 3 hours
- Surgical facility: AAAA-certified Ambulatory Surgical Center, outpatient surgery center
- Recovery time: 1 to 2 weeks
- Discomfort: mild
MALE NIPPLE/AREOLA SURGERY
A male patient will occasionally request reduction of large or elongated nipples. This may be congenital or a result of nipple piercing and nipple rings. Enlarged nipples are treated with selective removal of redundant tissue and skin, creating smaller and more proportional nipples.
A reduction of a large areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple) is occasionally needed, as is repositioning the nipple/areola complex on the chest wall. It is important to know that the male breast has different aesthetic parameters than the female breast: Both the areola and nipple are smaller and positioned on the chest wall lower and more laterally (outside) on a man.
- Type of anesthesia: local or twilight
- Duration of surgery: 1 to 2 hours
- Surgical facility: office, AAAA-certified Ambulatory Surgical Center
- Recovery time: 1 week
- Discomfort: none
MALE PECTORAL IMPLANTS
If exercise and nutrition have not worked in creating the desired shape of your pectoral area, you may want to think about pectoral implants. Solid silicone rubber implants placed beneath the pectoral muscles will bring better balance, increased projection, and improved definition to your chest.
- Type of anesthesia: general
- Duration of surgery: 2 to 3 hours
- Surgical facility: AAAA-certified Ambulatory Surgical Center, outpatient surgery center
- Recovery time: 1 to 3 weeks
- Discomfort: mild to moderate
- Removal of sutures: usually resorbable sutures are used
