CORRECTIVE NOSE SURGERY

A 23-year-old plastic surgery patient from South Florida had a car accident 2 years ago.  His nose was severely injured and wounds were left to heal spontaneously. He came to our Ft. Lauderdale plastic surgery office to seek help to reconstruct his nose.

Clinical evaluation revealed significant loss of tissue inside and outside of the nose; nose septum, cartilage, mucosa, as well as nasal bones and skin. We discussed complex reconstruction which will involve several stages 2 weeks to 6 months apart. This will include reconstruction of nasal airway by means of reconstruction of nasal mucosa and septum, reconstruction of  nose dorsum to correct saddle deformity and reconstruction of missing nasal skin.

His first surgery, the most extensive one, involved reconstruction of nasal passages using available, mucosa, skin and cartilage from inside and outside of the nose. Bone and cartilage were harvested from his rib to complete reconstruction of the framework. Large skin flap was harvested from the forehead and used to cover bone graft and replace missing skin. Two weeks later flap was divided from it’s pedicle. In 2 consecutive procedures nose flap was thinned.

Patient was shown before nose reconstruction and throughout different stages of reconstruction. Further refinement of his nose was planned but patient was unfortunatelly lost for follow up.
