Plastic Surgery for Muscle Mass

Calf and pectoral implants… The new norm for men? It’s a known fact that men are becoming more and more comfortable with the idea of going under the knife and men are now choosing cosmetic surgery over hours in the gym to overhaul their bodies. If you want a chest pumped up like your favorite American Idol villain, Simon Cowell, then you’re going to have to know some details first!

In recent years, plastic and cosmetic surgeons have established ways of bettering muscle contour with cosmetic implants and “sculpting” techniques. Calf augmentation is a procedure performed to enhance the lower portion of the leg. Calf implants, which were originally developed to restore leg contour in accident and disease victims, are now at times used to create cosmetic fullness in the lower leg and implants can be inserted in the calf to help minimize the resultant deformity. Similarly, pectoral implants are used to “bulk out” and give additional shape/definition to an otherwise well-developed male chest.

“Several years ago we started using fat grafts (patient’s own fat harvested with liposuction) to increase size of individual leg muscles (mostly medial and lateral gastrocnemius muscles) in patients who have underdeveloped calf muscles and thin calves,” says Dr. Zoran Potparic. “We usually do this procedure in two stages to avoid too much compression, which can compromise the function and blood supply of calf muscles. Once desired size of calf muscle is achieved, additional contouring of the muscles can be achieved with silicone implants placed on the top of muscle(s).”

Dr. Potparic states, “There is a selective group of patients (very frequently of Asian origin) who present with too large and wide calves. In order to achieve desired shape and decrease the size of muscle (usually medial portion of gastrocnemius muscle), prominent portion of muscle is surgically removed through a small incision placed in the knee crease. In some cases, the entire muscle needs to be removed. In well selected patients, reduction of muscle size may be achieved through selective resection of the small nerve branch which supplies that portion of the muscle. Muscle would stay there but without innervation it will in time lose significant volume.

Ladies do not fret, these procedures are not limited to the male sex. Women everywhere are opting for ripped calves as well! These procedures are now available to men and women around the world and if you’re considering one of these surgeries, you should contact Dr. Zoran Potparic, Plastic Surgery expert in Fort Lauderdale, FL for all of your body contouring needs!
