Is Lip Reduction Possible?

Okay…yes, there are lip reduction procedures performed in plastic surgery. Many would question – why would someone want to reduce the size of their lips? Especially, when one of the largest trends is getting lip augmentation procedures and lip fillers to create a “plumped pout.”

The trend of achieving smaller lips started in Asia to achieve a more Western style, and is now becoming more popular in the United States. Simply , people want what they don’t have, especially in achieving a cosmetic beauty trend. Other reasons why people may choose to go under lip reduction include: those who have ethnic lips, naturally large gums or lips, overdone lip augmentation, and want to bring down the size of their lips so it’s proportionate to the rest of their face.

In our office, Dr. Zoran Potparic will thoroughly discuss patient concerns and desired lip sizes. According to universally accepted standards, the lower lip should be about 30% larger than the upper lip. Understanding an individual’s lip characteristics and balancing their relationship is the major goal of lip reduction. The patient case shown above was a lip reduction patient of Dr. Zoran Potparic. The surgery is mostly performed under local anesthesia. During surgery a horizontal incision is created on the inside of the lip. The excess tissue is removed before the stitches are placed to close the incision(s) on the upper and/or lower lip. In the process of healing, patients can usually return to work within a week. The best results don’t appear until two to three months after surgery, which generally improves one’s appearance by balancing out the facial features.
