Otoplasty Recovery Time

Recovery Time for Otoplasty

After otoplasty, most patients are eager to see the changes. However, your ears need some time to recover before the final results can be seen. Dr. Zoran Potparic M.D.PA is an internationally acclaimed plastic surgeon in Fort Lauderdale who offers otoplasty, or ear shaping, for patients. Otoplasty is done for multiple reasons:

  • Birth Deformity
  • Trauma
  • Tumor Removal

Some procedures take longer than others, depending on the severity of the deformity or state of the ear. The recovery time also varies depending on the extent of the surgery.

What Is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is the cosmetic or reconstructive surgery of the external part of the ear to correct cosmetic issues or deformities. The most common version of this surgery is to correct prominent ears in children. The main goal of this cosmetic surgery is to improve the cosmetic look and functionality of the ear.

Otoplasty Aftercare and Recovery

You can expect to be out of work for a few days, typically 5 to 7 days, while you recover from the surgery. For more severe surgeries, the recovery time could take a little longer. The majority of recovery happens within the first week, but full recovery takes slightly longer.

The first few days after the procedure, a protective bandage will be worn to prevent any injury to the procedure site. After a few days, a headband is recommended to wear at night. Some things to avoid after the surgery are clothes with collars or other garments that could rub against your ear. You may experience swelling or discomfort, and it is important to follow proper aftercare instructions from your surgeon.

Tips for a healthy recovery:

  • Keep your head cool during the recovery period, mainly when bandages are being worn.
  • Avoid intense activity until the ears are completely healed.
  • Don’t use shampoo for at least a week.
  • Try to avoid sleeping on your side during recovery.
  • Keep your ear(s) elevated as much as possible to reduce swelling.
  • Apply any healing cream as directed by your doctor.
  • Be patient and call your doctor if you have any questions or complications.
