The Proces of a Facelift Surgery

A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgery procedure performed to bring back the youthful appearance of an aging face. This is achieved by reshaping the lower half of the face by removing excess facial skin as a result of natural aging.

What Does a Facelift Do?

A facelift procedure can:

  • Tighten loose, hanging skin around the jawline
  • Lift the corners of the mouth
  • Remove deep creases around the mouth and nose
  • Remove excess, hanging skin and fat under the chin and in the neck
  • Tighten underlying tissues
  • Enhance the forehead, cheeks, brows, and eyelids when combined with other facial surgeries

How Is a Facelift Done?

The exact technique a cosmetic surgeon will use during a facial procedure depends on the patient and their goals, but it starts with an incision at the hairline above and in front of the ear, in the temporal region. The incision goes in front of the ear, then around the bottom of the front to hug the earlobe, then back to the lower scalp, behind the ears.

The skin is lifted, tightened, and pulled back upwards so excess skin can be removed. The underlying muscle and connective tissue are redistributed and tightened, as well. The incision is closed with dissolvable sutures, staples, or skin glue.

A reputable plastic surgeon in Fort Lauderdale, like Dr. Zoran Potparic, will make the incisions in such a way that they blend with the patient’s hairline and natural facial structure.

Before and After a Facelift

Before facelift surgery, patients tend to have creases in their skin and sagging skin below the chin, also known as jowls. After facelift surgery, patients notice smoother and tighter facial skin. The youthful appearance that comes from a facelift procedure lasts for about 10 years.

Most patients who get a facelift experience mild discomfort. It’s important to follow the individual instructions provided by the doctor to achieve the best results.

Once the swelling subsides, patients will be able to see a difference in how they look. We suggest that patients give themselves about two weeks before resuming a normal level of daily activity and wait about four weeks before exercising, as far as facelift recovery time. It’s especially important to protect your skin from the sun, as you’ll be vulnerable to sunburn after surgery.
