CHEMICAL PEELS BLUE PEEL

Chemical peel can be used very effectively to treat skin discolorations on the face or elsewhere. This 63-years-old patient had dark pigmented skin lesions on her cheeks since her late twenties. She claims that in time they became darker and thicker. She was treated by multiple “facial treatments” provided by her aestheticians. She also consulted two dermatologists; each of them treated her with “a series of lasers”. After years of treatment she saw no improvement.

After thorough skin evaluation in our skin clinic in Fort Lauderdale malignant (cancerous) nature of this lesion was excluded.  We discussed treatment of this otherwise benign but aesthetically very unpleasing condition using TCA chemical peel. This type of intermediate depth chemical peel decreases production of dark pigment melanin in skin cells and peels old layers of skin on the surface of the lesion.

A single application of 20% TCA chemical peel has produced significant improvement within 6 weeks. Patient is shown before chemical TCA peel on the left and 6 months after treatment with TCA on the right.  TCA chemical peel, if carefully managed, can be safely used in darker skin types (Fitzgerald 4 and 5) without creating significant depigmentation.
