LIPOSUCTION
Body Sculpting
LiposuctionWho is a candidate for liposuction?
Liposuction is the number one aesthetic procedure for both men and women. It has enjoyed over 20 years of worldwide experience and is now safer with more predictable results than ever before. The best candidates are those of normal weight with isolated fatty areas that are resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction can significantly improve contour and design a more flattering shape by removing these fatty deposits.Typically requested for the abdomen and hips, liposuction is also routinely done on breasts, thighs, back, face, neck, buttocks, calves and ankles. Research has shown it can improve cardiovascular risk factors and minimize loose skin and sagging that accompany aging.
Liposuction is not a weight loss program. Those within 30 percent of their ideal weight with good overall health and elastic skin tone have the best results.
How is it done?
Liposuction is accomplished through the use of a cannula—a thin, hollow tube that is inserted below the skin to manually loosen fat and sculpt the region. Cannulas come in different sizes to address different areas of the body. Small incisions are made depending on the area treated. Anesthesia is either general or local with sedation. Most procedures are done in one to three hours in an outpatient setting. Large volume liposuction (over 5 liters of fat) is a more complex proposition and may be performed in a hospital or considered a multi-staged procedure.Recuperation
You can expect to up and walking around shortly after surgery to minimize risks due to poor circulation. You will wear an elastic garment on the treated area to reduce swelling, maintain your new shape and keep blood flowing for proper circulation. Most patients are back to work within the week. You will probably experience some temporary numbness, bruising and swelling. Contour irregularities may occur as fat settles. Results will be immediate but will continue to refine over 4 to 6 months. Your overall shape can continue to improve with proper exercise.Other Options
Liposuction can be used effectively in conjunction with abdominoplasty, buttock lift, or arm lift for best results. Certain facial and neck procedures are further refined using liposuction as well.

What liposuction technique is the best? Tumescence, ultrasound or power assisted?
Before defining which liposuction technique is best for you, your doctor must look at your overall health, skin quality, body mass, estimated volume of fat to be removed and number of sites to be treated. This is easily determined at your consultation. No one technique has significant advantages over the other.Who is not a good candidate for liposuction?
Candidates with a history of poor healing and serious complications brought about by conditions such as lupus, diabetes, chronic blood or heart disease should not have this procedure. Older patients have less elasticity in their skin—their results will not be as favorable as someone younger with good skin tone. Smokers may have higher complication rates and less favorable results. Can my dermatologist do liposuction on me?
A dermatologist can perform liposuction if they have completed specialized training in liposuction and if the procedure is of limited scope. Facial plastic surgeons are well suited to do liposuction if the case involves only face and neck. A board certified plastic surgeon is the only medical professional who you should consider for any area of you face, breast or body but particularly if liposuction is combined with other surgical procedures. Can liposuction give me a 6 pack?
No. Liposuction does not tighten skin, it sculpts the body. A 6 pack is muscle, and only exercise will help achieve this goal.Is it true that liposuction can help cellulite?
No. In fact, it can make it worse. Cellulite is not fat.I went to see a doctor for liposuction and he told me I needed a tummy tuck. Can you explain that?
If a patient has too much skin distribution in the abdomen, thighs, or arms or if the skin does not adequately contract after liposuction, a combination tummy tuck and liposuction may be necessary. It is safe to perform conservative liposuction of the abdomen, as well as any other areas at the same time as a tummy tuck. When extensive skin excision is indicated during the abdominoplasty and includes tightening the abdominal muscles, liposuction should be performed as a follow up procedure 2-3 months later. Will my fat come back, or is liposuction permanent?
Not all fat cells removed, so if the patient gains a lot of weight, the treated areas will get larger. It is very important to commit to a regimen of healthy diet and exercise to maintain and maximize your results.
