ADVANTAGES OF AN (ASC)

 AMBULATORY SURGERY CENTER

Many surgeons and many patients tend to prefer ambulatory surgery centers for outpatient procedures for a number of reasons:

  • Control over procedures and standards. Dr. Potparic prefers working in the ASC as he can set the standards for equipment, safety, postoperative care, etc., rather than having these decided for him by a hospital administrator.
  • Patient Control: The patient has options of scheduling surgery on dates convenient to their schedule, especially a Friday surgery which allows you the weekend for recovery.
  • Cost. In numerous cases, the outpatient procedure performed in an ASC costs one-half as much as the same procedure done in the hospital.
  • Safe Option to hospital surgery and is expressly designed for comfort and convenience. The finely tuned level of care provided in the relaxed surroundings makes your experience safer and less stressful.
  • Presence of family and friends. Whereas most hospitals keep patients recovering from a surgical procedure in separate rooms, in an ASC the patient can usually spend the recovery period after surgery with their loved ones.
  • Convenience. There is much less administrative paperwork and "red tape" at an ambulatory surgical center compared to the admissions process at most hospitals. Patients also like the fact that they can leave an ASC relatively quickly after their surgery, as soon as it is considered safe to be discharged.

INFORMATION FROM THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF PLASTIC SURGEONS

Rejuvenating Upper Eyelids with Your Own Fat
Embargo for Release: Sunday, October 03, 2010
Researchers have used cadavers to demonstrate rejuvenating the upper eyelid with fat injections can be safe and reproducible when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon with meticulous technique and knowledge of the critical anatomy, reports a new study presented at the ASPS Plastic Surgery 2010 conference, Oct. 1-5, in Toronto. Fat grafting has been used to correct what is described as a sunken eyeball; however, fat injections in the eyelid are associated with a higher risk of fat embolus. To refine this approach, doctors injected fat into the upper eyelids of the cadavers, and then examined the area to determine the anatomical fate of the fat after injection. Cadaver dissection uniformly demonstrated that injected fat was deposited evenly and appropriately, without migration or the presence of emboli. The authors then successfully injected fat into the upper eyelids of twenty-one consecutive (living) female patients to treat deepened upper eyelids. Mean age was 56.6 years, and volumes injected were 0.20 to 2.30 cc per eyelid. The only complication reported was under-grafting in several patients, which was treated with repeat fat grafting or soft-tissue fillers.

By the Numbers:

  • More than 200,000 eyelid surgeries were performed in 2009, according to ASPS statistics.
  • Eyelid surgery was the third most popular cosmetic surgical procedure performed last year.

Cheek Augmentation with Own Fat Offers Lasting, Natural Alternative to Implants, Study Finds
Embargo for Release: Sunday, October 03, 2010
Restoring cheek volume, as we age, is now recognized as a critical part of facial rejuvenation. Even celebrities are augmenting their cheeks in an attempt to turn back the clock, with some being criticized for adding too much volume. However until now, there have been no studies to confirm whether any injectable filler is effective at achieving long lasting results for volumizing cheeks. A new study presented at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) Plastic Surgery 2010 conference, Oct. 1-5, in Toronto, found using fat injections to augment cheeks produced a significant increase in volume and may offer patients a long lasting, natural alternative to commercial fillers or implants. Five patients, who had a facelift in combination with fat injections to their cheeks, with fat taken from their abdomen, were examined using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) which quantitatively measured changes in cheek volume. An MRI was taken before surgery and at intervals up to 6 months, and in one patient, one year post surgery. The authors found that cheek volume was significantly increased one month after surgery. Volume was maintained at 6 months and one year (in one patient) after surgery.

By the Numbers:

  • Nearly 9,000 cheek augmentation procedures using an implant were performed in 2009, according to the ASPS.
  • More than 100,000 facelifts were performed in 2009, making it the sixth most popular surgical cosmetic procedure.

Success for Breast Augmentation Using Patients' Own Fat is Possible, New Study Finds
Embargo for Release: Monday, October 04, 2010
Using fat injections for cosmetic breast augmentation has gone from an obscure procedure to one of substantial interest. A new study presented at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) Plastic Surgery 2010 conference, Oct. 1 - 5, in Toronto, is adding validation to recent reports that fat grafting for cosmetic breast augmentation is effective and produces long term results. The study examined 25 patients who had breast augmentation using liposuctioned fat taken from their body. To help make room for the injected fat and to test whether it would increase the grafts' survival rate, patients wore an external tissue expander device for 3 weeks prior to surgery. Fat grafting ranged from 220-650 cc per breast. Patients were photographed and had other breast imaging tests conducted before expansion, and six months after receiving fat injections to their breasts. All patients demonstrated visible breast volume increase at 6 months after surgery, with a mean volume increase of 250 cc per breast.

The study concludes that external pre-expansion of the breasts is an important variable in the success of the procedure. Furthermore, the study authors say this technique can be performed in a time efficient manner with reproducible, long lasting results.  Although this procedure is gaining scientific validity and traction among plastic surgeons, it is not the same as having breast enlargement with implants.

By the Numbers:

  • Nearly 290,000 breast augmentations were performed last year, up 36 percent since 2000, reports the ASPS.
  • Breast Augmentation was the most frequently performed cosmetic surgical procedure in 2009.
