Body Contouring (Implants)

BODY CONTOURING

For a body contouring procedure, specifically a tummy tuck, the doctor typically makes an incision where it will be hidden by bathing suits or undergarments, but it is important to realize that there will be a scar. A second incision is made around the navel to free it from surrounding tissue. The skin and fat layers above the abdominal wall are lifted upward to expose the abdominal muscles. Your surgeon will suture these muscles, pulling them closer together, which creates a flatter, firmer abdominal wall and a slimmer waistline.

Once the muscles are tightened, the layer of skin and fat will be stretched back over the abdominal wall and a new hole will be created for your navel. Excess skin and fat that hang beyond the original incision are removed. Drainage tubes are usually placed in the abdomen through tiny holes below the incision, allowing fluids to escape as you heal after your body contouring session. The incisions will be sutured and bandages will be applied.

BEFORE & AFTER PHOTOS

BODY CONTOURING WITH IMPLANTS

Any area of the body’s appearance is determined by three basic components: skin; soft tissue, including muscles; and the underlying bones. Defined body features, visible contours, natural angles, and curves that are proportionate together create structural balance and a more attractive appearance. When underlying structure is disproportionate, it significantly affects how others see us and how we see ourselves.

To facilitate correction of deep underlying body structures, a variety of body contouring implants made of biocompatible materials is available.

Breast implants: The most frequent application of body contouring implants is in breast enhancement surgery. They are also used in reconstructive breast surgery after mastectomy for breast cancer.

Facial implants: If you are bothered by a small chin, weak jaw, or lack of facial contour, plastic surgery with facial implants may benefit you.

Pectoral implants: If exercise and nutrition cannot create the desired shape of a male chest, solid silicone rubber implants placed beneath pectoral muscles will bring better balance, increased projection, and improved definition to pectoral area.

Calf implants: Both women and men with otherwise proportional upper body and thighs may present with disproportionally skinny, underdeveloped calves. This can involve both or one leg. This deformity may also be a result of polio paralysis from childhood. Placement of solid silicone rubber implants to augment calf muscles will significantly improve deformities.

Other body implants: Satisfactory correction of some birth and/or posttraumatic deformities of body, skull, and extremities may be achieved with custom-made implants.

The duration of procedure, type of anesthesia, and recovery time will depend on the selected body contouring procedure, but this is what Fort Lauderdale-area patients can roughly expect:

  • Type of anesthesia: twilight or general
  • Duration of surgery: 2 to 4 hours
  • Surgical facility: AAAA-certified Ambulatory Surgery Center
  • Recovery time: 1 to 2 weeks
  • Discomfort: mild to moderate
